Church of England Prayer for the Week: 30th November 2020

Hello all

Please see below this week’s Prayer for the Nation

Blessings

Revd. Pete

Loving God,
your Son Jesus Christ came that we might have life and have it abundantly;
pour out your blessing upon our nation;
where there is illness, bring your healing touch;
where there is fear, strengthen us with the knowledge of your presence;
where there is uncertainty, build us up in faith;
where there is dishonesty,lead us into truth;
where there is discord,may we know the harmony of your love;
this we ask in Jesus’ name.
Amen

Advent Reflections

Hello everyone,

As you know, Sunday marks the start of Advent in the Church calendar, and as with everything this year, it's going to look a little different. We wanted to find ways to mark this season despite the restrictions we are all living with, and one of those ways is with a calendar of reflections, some written by people from our Parish and others by those further afield, one for each day of Advent.

These reflections will be posted on our Facebook page each day, but we have also put them together in a booklet for those of you who would prefer to engage with them that way. The booklet may be downloaded here, and we hope and pray that it will be a blessing to you. We are also delivering paper copies of this booklet to those who we know don't have internet access, so that we can all take this journey through Advent together.

Advice on printing (saving ink and paper)
If you want to print the booklet rather than look at it on your computer/phone, you can do so in black and white or colour (there are a few images, but you shouldn't lose too much of the effect by printing in black and white if you want to save ink) If you print from page 2 rather than page 1 then you will also save ink as the cover page is quite dark. To save paper, when you go to print if you select 'layout' and 'print two pages per sheet' then this will use half the amount of paper and the text should still be big enough to read. If you are able to print double-sided on your printer that will use even less paper. I hope this helps!

with every blessing for this Advent season,

Hannah

Gifts for Children and Young People in Need this Christmas

Hello all

Very sadly, because of the current Covid restrictions, we are unable to host our annual Christingle/Gift Service at St Wilf’s on the first Sunday in December as we normally do.   You will be receiving information shortly about a Christingle Service we are organising by Zoom in December, which I’m very excited about!

Although we can’t meet physically to receive your gifts for children and young people in need in the Selby area, their need has, of course, not disappeared. As you can imagine, given the increasingly difficult economic circumstances at present, the need to ensure that children and young people from homes really struggling at this time do receive a gift on Christmas day is greater than ever.

So, here at St Wilfrid’s and with Captain Richard Cooke of the Church Army in Selby, we’d be hugely grateful if you would feel able to donate a gift/gifts this year.

This is what we’d love you to do by Sunday 6th December:

  • Wrap a gift, marking clearly on it whether it is suitable for a boy/girl/both, and what age group it would be most appropriate for e.g. 0-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-15, 16+ etc.
  • Bring your wrapped and marked gift to Rev Pete’s house, St Wilfrid’s Rectory, leaving the gift/s in a plastic bag on the front veranda.

 Directions to the Rectory:

  • Come down the lane to the left of the St Wilfrid’s churchyard.
  • You can park in the car park at the bottom on the left.
  • There is a green garden gate over the lane from the carpark, which will take you to the front of the house.
  • It’s the door facing the garden and churchyard and under a veranda.

Many thanks, indeed!

Blessings

Rev Pete

Church of England Prayer for the week: 23rd November 2020

Lord Jesus Christ,

in these dark and difficult days, we turn our hearts to you.

In ages past, you have delivered our nation from disaster.

Do it again, we pray.

Give wisdom beyond human wisdom to our leaders,

Give strength beyond human strength to the NHS and all our frontline workers.

Give comfort beyond human comfort to the elderly and all who grieve.

Lord Jesus Christ,

in these dark and difficult days,

turn your face towards us,

have mercy upon us,

and heal our land, we pray.

Amen.

Christingle @ Home

Dear all,

With Advent and Christmas approaching, I am very excited to announce that the Alive@5 team will be hosting a Christingle at Home Service on Sunday 13th December at 5pm, by Zoom. The service will last no longer than an hour, and along with the usual fun, games, prayer, and songs, we will be making Christingles together and supporting the work of the Children’s Society. The flyer for the service is attached below.

If you would like to join us, please sign up by emailing families@stwilfridsparish.com by Sunday 6th December. We will then send you more details about the service, including what you will need to have with you. We will also send out the Zoom invitation for the service to you a couple of days before we meet.

We look forward to celebrating with you then!

With all blessings,

Rev Rob and the Alive@5 Team

Church of England Prayer for the week: 16th November 2020

Loving Father God, be with us in our distress;
be with our families, friends, and neighbours,
our country and our world.

Give health to the sick,
hope to the fearful,
and comfort to mourners.

Give wisdom to our frontline and key workers,
insight to our Government,
and patience to us all.

Overcome disease with the power of your new life,
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Making Advent Special 2020

Making Advent special

You might want to engage with a ‘Retreat in Daily Life’ as a way of marking Advent when, as we look back on the year, and begin a new Christian calendar, so much has been uncertain

Here is an invitation to join in a Retreat in Daily Life by

·       skype,

·       facetime

·       zoom

·       whataspp

·       or phone.

This involves the retreatant committing ideally to the following from Monday 30th November to Friday 4th December:

· At least 30 minutes of prayer each day with suggested ideas,

 · Keeping a note of what comes out of that prayer time (even if it is ‘nothing!’),

· And chatting to the Retreat Facilitator, in confidence, for up to 20 minutes each day, about the experience of prayer.

·  And a brief conversation on Advent Sunday (November 29th) to set the scene.

If you would like to find out more, or make this retreat, this journey, as you live each day at home at the beginning of Advent, please contact Rev. Roy Shaw, the Facilitator, either via 01757 212360, or via revroyshaw@protonmail.com

‘Maranatha!’ – Come, Lord Jesus!
